Cabin, August 2017

Disclaimer

This was another August trip to the Cabin. This trip lasted from 17 August to 24 August, 2017. Unfortunately, this and some other trips never got properly documented. I have added a few captions, but for the most part, the photos will have to tell their own story.

The photos do show far more of the beauty of Nature. Besides the scenery, a solar eclipse occurred while I was at the Cabin. More on this below.

Fortunately, I did write a short entry in the logbook at the Cabin. This is included below.

Eclipse

A solar eclipse occurred while I was at the Cabin. The path of totality was further to the south so only a partial eclipse could be observed at the Cabin. I did not have any special gear for viewing but decided I needed to do something. I made a simple pin hole camera from a piece of cardboard and projected it onto a piece of black cardboard to track the progression of the eclipse. There is also a small telescope at the Cabin. I used this to collect the light and also projected it onto the black cardboard. The field of view of the telescope was about the same size as the angular size of the Sun so it was hard to get a projection of the complete Sun at most times during the eclipse. These are in no way impressive or interesting photos of the eclipse, however, they are the only ones from the Cabin!

Logbook Entry

I drove all night from Cleveland arriving by 6am on Thursday (17 Aug) just beating the rain by ~1/2 hour. Cabin was in good shape. Usual dirt accumulation but few signs of mice. They are still around but don't get into much if stuff isn't left out. They did tear up paper that was left out.

Weather was all over the place ranging from a sunny 80°F to cool rain to a low of ~45°F. Actually had a fire going a couple of days to take the chill out. Slept most nights in a camping hammock outside (even through the cold and rain).

Spent most of my time hiking and reading. There are many new trails to add to the map. Most everything worked great. The refrigerator still gets too cold! Except the well: a lot of work for little dirty water. Something may need to be done about that.

Overall it was a great trip as always. The area always has new things to discover. Unfortunately they seem to be working on improving the roads in the area to push more traffic past the Cabin. There is already too much!
